Dear Friends,

“We exist to make God’s love real.
Empowered by the Holy Spirit:
We live in Christ.
We lead others to live in Christ.
We share Christ’s compassion.”

Every once in a while it is a good thing to be reminded of the Mission Statement of our congregation. Every once in a while it is a good thing to take a look at the kinds of things we do, and see if they measure up to that Mission Statement.

I have been working on my calendar for both Church and personal events, and as I get farther and farther into the future (I’m looking at summer of 2012 right now), I come to realize that not every event should be automatically copied over and over again. There are some events which happen on a regular basis; but the things we are doing today might not always be on our “to do” list in the future.

Our interests change. Our sense of what is important will change. The needs of family or friends, church or community may change. Will we take on a leadership role? Will we shuffle off to the shadows and watch as others take the lead? Will some work be accomplished and finished?

Do you have a personal “mission statement?” What guides you as you make decisions and become involved in the things of life? What helps to set your priorities as you choose what to embrace, and what to give up? What motivates you to act, or to step aside? What gives you energy in life?

I hope that for you there is a sense of recognizing what is truly important in the bigger picture of life. While some things come and go, there are some eternally valuable things as well. When all is said and done, what will have made a difference?

Take some time this summer to think about your personal Mission Statement, so that you can better decide what will be your goals for the future.

In Christ,

Tom
