KIRKIN’ O’ THE TARTAN

May 28, 2017 10:30 a.m.

The Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan service, in conjunction with the Alma Highland Festival, is held at 10:30 a.m. on the Sunday of the Alma Highland Festival, which is on Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

This special service starts with the bagpiper piping in the “Little Entrance” honoring the Holy Scriptures, followed by the “Procession of Banners”, a parade of tartan banners as the names of represented clans are solemnly read aloud. More than 40 banners are carried in by families that can trace their lineage back to particular clans. After these clans are recognized, everyone in attendance is asked to add their clan origins to the list, so that the special blessing can include everyone.

This is an opportunity for everyone, of all faiths and ethnic origins, to experience the true spirit of Scotland at the Kirking of the Tartan.

The Choir sings a special anthem directed by our choir director, Anthony Patterson and accompanied by our organist, Al Bartholomew.

At the close of the service, the bagpiper leads the recessional down to Fellowship Hall, where we enjoy some Scottish delicacies at the Fellowship Hour.

Come enjoy this special tradition.
